Satirical film targets Italy's Andreotti

CANNES, France (Reuters) - The great survivor of Italian politics, Giulio Andreotti, is shown as a cold, solitary but often comic figure at the heart of a corrupt system in a satirical new film by Italian director Paolo Sorrentino.

"Il Divo" (The Star), being shown at the Cannes film festival, shows Andreotti at the end of his long career as accusations begin to mount that an intricate system of patronage he had built to keep power was linked ultimately to the mafia.

Coming after Matteo Garrone's "Gomorra" (Gomorrah), about the Naples Camorra, it is the second film at the festival to examine the role of organized crime in Italy.

But it uses humor and symbolism rather than the gritty realism of Garrone's film to underline the grotesque perversion of a system in which, as Andreotti explains, "evil is necessary so that good can exist".

"Italy is different from other countries because of the occult side of power," Sorrentino told a news conference after the film's screening. "Power is not as transparent as in other countries and that's very specific to Italy," he said.

Andreotti, part of the Italian political establishment since 1947, was a seemingly permanent fixture as prime minister, foreign minister, interior minister or eminence grise as one shaky government coalition succeeded another.

Dry, inscrutable and apparently indestructible, he was once described by former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher as having "a positive aversion to principle".

Now a senator for life, he was tried but acquitted on charges of mafia associations after the so-called "Clean Hands" corruption investigations of the 1990s brought down much of the established political order in Italy.

Britney Spears Still Unfit For Legal Proceedings

A Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner said on Thursday (May 29) that Britney Spears is still unfit to participate in the legal proceedings of her conservatorship case.

Neither Spears nor her father or conservator, Jamie Spears, were in court today, with attorney's discussing her medical condition behind closed doors with Commissioner Reva Goetz.

Following the session, Spears' court-appointed attorney, Samuel Ingham, addressed the court saying her medical condition is "fluid" due to her changing treatment.

Goetz expressed concern, stating that the popstar is still unable to participate "in any meaningful way" to proceedings and "wants to do additional testing in the not-too-distant future – something we will need to address in June."

The Commissioner additionally stated that a business plan for Spears is to be filed by attorneys by June 13.

"Indiana Jones" cracks whip at box office opening

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Paramount Pictures appears to have another hit on its hands, as the new "Indiana Jones" movie grossed $25 million from its first full day in North American theaters, independent box office analysts reported on Friday.

That tally ranks as the fourth highest-grossing Thursday debut on record and puts "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" on track to possibly match or overtake last year's "Pirates of the Caribbean" film as the biggest opening on a U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The last big release from Viacom Inc's Paramount, "Iron Man," opened three weeks ago with $98.6 million in U.S.-Canadian receipts its first Friday-through-Sunday frame -- a sum that the latest "Indiana Jones" film is expected to surpass.

Unlike the new "Indiana Jones" film, "Iron Man" was fully financed by Marvel Studios, which paid Paramount a flat fee to market and distribute its film. Thus, Paramount has much more at stake riding on the success of its latest release.

"Crystal Skull," directed by Steven Spielberg, is the fourth movie in the beloved and lucrative movie franchise that began in 1981 with "Raiders of the Lost Ark," and is the first to hit the big screen in 19 years.

Harrison Ford reprises his title role as the bullwhip-cracking archeologist who hates snakes, and reunites with actress Karen Allen, his co-star from the first adventure. In the new film, set during the 1950s Cold War era, he competes with an evil KGB agent played by Cate Blanchett to find a skull endowed with mystic powers.

Box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers, said the film's opening Thursday performance was strong enough to bode well for its commercial potential but not so strong as to diminish its weekend audience.

If its Friday-through-Monday box office tally crosses the $140 million mark, the film would exceed last year's Walt Disney Co's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End" as the biggest North American opening yet for the four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend.

The Black Keys , Attack & Release

The Black Keys , Attack & Release

THE Black KEYSAttack & Release (Nonesuch/Shock)Evaluation: * * * *Verdict: To a greater extent subdued simply no less gutsy attack on Buckeye State duo's latestSinger/guitarist Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney look moochy enough, especially the former with his fresh woolly beard. Simply musically the Ohio duo, world Health Organization play the Powerstation on June 28, ar not meant to be moochy and subdued. Fifth part album Approach & Release is not as immediately riveting as the Black Keys' past releases, when they attacked and forgot around the release.Albums like 2003's Thickfreakness and 2004's Caoutchouc Manufactory were primal, unhinged and brash tinder rock'n'roll vapours. In contrast Attack & Exit is mostly a serenade, and a beautiful ace at that. So it takes or so acquiring used to.The excellent Psychotic person Young woman is kicked along by a banjo twang and a chorus of ghostly voices; Lies writhes along and there's a tinct of gospel about it; and Remember When (Side A) has spacey spaghetti Western whistles as a background to Auerbach's dulcet state croon. Only then, simply when you motive a shot of moon, the raunchy do and channel of Remember When (Side B) kicks in and the Keys are indorse to their old ways.

It's in the latter piece of the record album with the hip-hop meets country blues of Saame Old Thing and So He Won't Break (with possibly the influence of manufacturer Dangermouse from Gnarls Barkley coming through) that you finally agnise the Black Keys get moved on. Go with it.
